What is the difference between a coagulant and a flocculant?

A coagulant — typically an inorganic salt such as ferric chloride or PAC — destabilizes fine particles by neutralizing their surface charge. A flocculant is a long-chain polymer that then bridges the destabilized particles into large, fast-settling flocs. Many plants use both in sequence, and some polymer products can perform both roles. Jar testing shows the best combination for a given water.

How do I choose between powder, emulsion and liquid flocculants?

Powders offer high active content and long shelf life but need dissolving equipment and 30-60 minutes of make-down time. Emulsions carry very high molecular weights and disperse quickly, suiting automated preparation units. Liquid grades are the simplest to feed — some can be dosed directly without dilution. The choice depends on your dosing equipment, staffing and the floc strength your process requires.

How is the correct flocculant dose determined?

By jar testing: a series of doses is applied to samples of the actual water or sludge, and floc size, settling rate, clarity and — for dewatering — cake dryness are compared. The selected dose is then confirmed at plant scale. Doses are rechecked whenever feed quality changes, because overdosing polymers can restabilize particles and worsen results.

Why do polymer flocculants need gentle mixing and make-down time?

Flocculant performance comes from very long polymer chains. During preparation the chains must uncoil fully in water — which takes maturing time — and any high-shear pumping or mixing breaks them irreversibly, cutting bridging power. Correct make-down concentration, gentle agitation and low-shear transfer protect the polymer and reduce consumption.
