What is an oxygen scavenger and why do steam boilers need one?
An oxygen scavenger is a reducing chemical dosed into boiler feedwater to remove the traces of dissolved oxygen that remain after mechanical deaeration. Even very small amounts of oxygen cause localised pitting corrosion of boiler steel, so chemical scavenging is standard practice in industrial and power-plant steam systems.
Should I use a straight hydrazine product or a multi-component blend?
Dedicated hydrazine grades such as CHIMISCAV HH-80 and HHC-24 give solids-free oxygen control suited to high-pressure plants, while CHIMI TREAT BWT wraps oxygen scavenging into an all-in-one programme with scale, sludge and pH control for industrial boilers. The choice follows boiler pressure, water quality and how the plant prefers to manage dosing.
How is an oxygen-scavenger programme monitored?
By measuring dissolved oxygen after the deaerator, testing the scavenger residual in feedwater or boiler water, and tracking iron levels in the condensate. A stable residual with low dissolved oxygen confirms the programme is protecting the system; feed rates are adjusted whenever load or feedwater conditions change.
Do hydrazine-based oxygen scavengers add dissolved solids to the boiler?
No — hydrazine reacts with oxygen to form only nitrogen and water, so it contributes no dissolved solids and no extra blowdown load. This is its defining advantage for high-pressure boilers compared with salt-forming scavengers, which add solids that must be removed by blowdown.
