How do I choose between iron-based and aluminium-based coagulants?
Iron coagulants (ferric chloride, ferrous chloride, ferrous sulphate) work across a broad pH range, are strong performers for phosphorus removal and sulphide control, and produce dense, fast-settling flocs. Aluminium coagulants such as polyaluminium chloride (PAC) consume less alkalinity, cause a smaller pH drop and often need lower doses, particularly in cold water. The reliable way to decide is a side-by-side jar test on your actual water, scoring settled turbidity, floc quality, pH depression and sludge volume — CHIMI ART's technical team can support the trial.
What is jar testing and why does every coagulant page recommend it?
A jar test dose-ranges the coagulant on a sample of the actual water in stirred beakers, simulating rapid mix, flocculation and settling. It reveals the dose, coagulation pH and mixing regime that give the clearest supernatant with the least chemical and sludge. Because raw-water quality varies by source and season, published 'typical' ranges are starting points only — the jar test converts them into a site-specific operating window before full-scale dosing.
What tanks and materials are suitable for storing liquid coagulants?
Liquid coagulants are acidic and corrosive to common metals. Store them in polyethylene, FRP or rubber-lined tanks with chemical-resistant pumps, piping and gaskets (PVC, CPVC, PE, FRP), and keep containers closed and out of direct sunlight. Avoid unprotected carbon steel, aluminium and galvanised components anywhere in the system, provide spill containment around tanks, and observe each product's shelf life — typically 12 months for liquid grades and 24 months for solid grades stored dry.
In what packaging are CHIMI ART coagulants supplied?
Liquid coagulants ship in 200 L drums, 1,000 L IBC totes, and bulk flexitanks for container-scale export volumes. Solid grades — such as ferrous sulfate heptahydrate and PAC powder — are supplied in 25 kg and 50 kg bags or in bulk. Every delivery is accompanied by a certificate of analysis, and technical and safety data sheets are available for each product on request or from its product page.
