Flocculants enter a municipal works at two distinct points, and product choice differs at each. In the flocculation basins that follow coagulant dosing, ART FLOC 25 PWG — a high-molecular-weight cationic liquid designed for drinking-water clarification — is fed at low dose rates and can be dosed directly without complex make-down. In dissolved-air flotation and general clarification duties, ARTFLOC L 53 H, a cationic polyacrylamide emulsion with at least 30% active content, builds larger, shear-resistant flocs. At the other end of the plant, Polyacrylamide (PAM) powder (≥ 88% active content) is the standard conditioning polymer for sludge dewatering on belt presses and centrifuges. Selecting between them comes down to charge type and density, molecular weight, and your dosing hardware: emulsions and liquids need only simple dilution loops, while powder grades require a make-down unit with aging time but ship and store more economically. A utility buyer should ask for bench flocculation and drainage tests on the plant's own sludge and clarifier feed, the effective pH window of each grade (4.0-10.0 for ARTFLOC L 53 H), recommended make-down concentrations, and documentation covering suitability for potable-water duty under the regulations that apply at your site.

What is a flocculant in municipal water treatment?
A flocculant in municipal water treatment is a water-soluble, high-molecular-weight polymer — usually polyacrylamide — dosed after the coagulant to bind destabilised particles into large, fast-settling flocs. Waterworks use it as a coagulant aid ahead of clarifiers and filters, in dissolved-air flotation, and as the conditioning polymer that dewaters sludge.
Coagulation and flocculation are two different jobs. The coagulant (an iron or aluminium salt dosed at the rapid mix) collapses the surface charge of colloids; the flocculant, added seconds to minutes later in the slow-mix stage, bridges those destabilised particles into flocs heavy enough to settle or strong enough to survive flotation and filtration. A polymer cannot replace the coagulant — it can only make the coagulant's work cheaper and the downstream clarifier faster.
Where polymer is dosed in a waterworks — and how much
Three dosing points dominate. As a coagulant aid after rapid mix, polymer doses are small — typically a fraction of a milligram per litre — and serve to strengthen floc and cut coagulant demand. In dissolved-air flotation the polymer is dosed ahead of the contact zone to build flocs that attach to micro-bubbles. In sludge dewatering the same polymer family is dosed in kilograms per tonne of dry solids to condition thickened sludge for belt presses and centrifuges, where it sets cake dryness and filtrate clarity.
The economical dose is found on the bench, not in a brochure: jar tests on the plant's own clarifier feed, and drainage or capillary-suction-time tests on its own sludge, across the seasonal turbidity range. Overdosing a polymer is not harmless — excess charge re-stabilises particles, blinds filters and raises residual monomer in the treated water.
Residual acrylamide — the potable-water rule every buyer must know
Polyacrylamide is made from acrylamide monomer, and a trace of unreacted monomer remains in every grade. Drinking-water regulators therefore control either the monomer content of the product or the acrylamide reaching the consumer: the EU Drinking Water Directive sets a parametric value of 0.10 µg/L for acrylamide, calculated from the product's specified maximum release; WHO's guideline value is 0.5 µg/L; and in the United States the treatment technique limits the combination of polymer dose and residual monomer. In Europe, EN 1407 and EN 1408 are the product standards for anionic/non-ionic and cationic polyacrylamides used in water intended for human consumption. Practically, a utility buyer asks every supplier for the grade's residual monomer figure, the maximum dose at which it complies, and documentation that fits the rules at the plant's own site.

Can a flocculant replace the coagulant in a drinking-water plant?
No. The coagulant destabilises colloids; the flocculant bridges them into settleable flocs. A well-chosen polymer can reduce coagulant demand and improve settled-water quality, but dosing polymer alone onto charged colloids leaves them dispersed. Jar tests that vary coagulant and polymer together show the real economic optimum.
Is polyacrylamide safe in drinking water?
Polyacrylamide itself is inert; the concern is residual acrylamide monomer. Regulators cap it — 0.10 µg/L as an EU parametric value, 0.5 µg/L as the WHO guideline — which is why potable-duty grades are specified with a maximum residual monomer and a maximum dose, and why plants keep records of both. Ask the supplier for that documentation before trial.
Cationic or anionic polymer for potable water?
Anionic and non-ionic grades are the usual coagulant aids after iron or aluminium salts, where the metal hydroxide floc carries a positive charge. Cationic grades dominate in dissolved-air flotation and sludge dewatering, where the particles and biosolids are negatively charged. Raw-water chemistry and the coagulant already in use decide; the jar test confirms.
Powder, emulsion or liquid — which form should a utility buy?
Powder ships and stores most economically but needs a make-down unit and ageing time; emulsions and liquids need only simple dilution loops and suit plants with limited preparation space or variable dosing. Effective pH window, shelf life and the dosing hardware already installed usually settle the choice.
How is the right polymer dose found for a waterworks?
On the bench, with the plant's own water and sludge: jar tests across the seasonal turbidity range for clarifier duty, and drainage or capillary-suction-time tests for dewatering.
