Commodities for Power Generation

The commodity chemicals a power plant consumes are tied to three systems: the demineraliser, the cooling circuit, and effluent neutralisation. Sodium Hydroxide (Caustic Soda) (30-50% NaOH) and Hydrochloric Acid or Sulfuric Acid regenerate ion-exchange resins in the make-up water plant — a duty where consistent concentration matters, because regeneration programmes are calibrated to a specific strength. Sodium Hypochlorite (10-15% available chlorine) controls biological fouling in once-through and tower cooling circuits. In closed cooling loops, Sodium Nitrite (≥ 98.5% NaNO₂) is the classic corrosion-control chemical, maintaining a passive film on carbon steel. The same acids and caustic return at the effluent end, neutralising regeneration wastes before discharge. Power-plant buyers should weigh purity as well as price: resin-regeneration acid and caustic should be low in contaminants that foul resin, so request the specification and an analysis document with each delivery. Ask about storage compatibility — caustic in stainless steel, acids in acid-resistant construction, hypochlorite cool and dark with its 6-month shelf life — and about delivery formats, since regeneration chemicals are typically taken by bulk tanker while nitrite ships in 25 kg and 50 kg bags. Finally, agree a supply schedule that covers outage periods, when chemical demand spikes.
