For corrosion inhibition in closed-loop cooling and boiler circuits, established practice maintains a nitrite residual in the region of 500-2000 ppm, with the exact target set by system metallurgy, water quality and the treatment program in use. Dose as a dissolved solution, circulate, then verify the residual by titration or test kit; retest and top up after any make-up water addition or drain-down, since dilution below the protective threshold is the most common cause of failure. For food preservation, dose strictly according to the applicable food regulations for the product category. For synthesis and dyeing, dosage follows process stoichiometry. Confirm any dose on the actual system by trial before standardizing it.
How It Works
Sodium nitrite protects steel by anodic passivation. In a closed circuit, the nitrite ion (NO₂⁻) oxidizes exposed iron at anodic sites and converts it into a thin, adherent passive oxide film that blocks further electrochemical corrosion. Because the film must cover every anodic site, a minimum nitrite residual has to be maintained; if the residual falls too low, unprotected spots can corrode preferentially, which is why residuals are tested and topped up rather than dosed once. In food preservation, nitrite inhibits the growth of Clostridium botulinum and stabilizes the characteristic cured color by binding to muscle pigments. In chemical synthesis, it is the standard reagent for diazotization of aromatic amines, the first step in manufacturing many azo dyes used in textile processing.
Usage Tips
Store sodium nitrite in its original sealed bags in a dry, cool, well-ventilated area; correctly stored it keeps for 24 months. Sodium nitrite as a closed-loop corrosion inhibitor
In closed cooling and heating circuits the nitrite ion passivates mild steel: it oxidises exposed iron at anodic sites into a thin, adherent oxide film that stops further electrochemical attack. Because every anodic site has to be covered, a minimum residual must be held — established practice keeps it in the region of 500–2,000 ppm as nitrite, at an alkaline pH commonly around 8.5–9.5 and often with a borate buffer — and topped up after any make-up or drain-down; a residual that drifts below the protective threshold invites pitting rather than uniform corrosion.
