How It Works
Ferrous sulphate dissociates in water to release Fe²⁺ ions, which neutralise the negative surface charges on suspended and colloidal matter so the particles can aggregate into settleable flocs. Reacting with the water's natural alkalinity, the iron forms hydroxide precipitates that enmesh fine solids as they grow. Where dissolved oxygen or an oxidant is present, ferrous iron converts to the ferric form, whose hydroxide flocs are denser and settle faster — one reason coagulation performance with ferrous salts is typically strongest at elevated pH.
