Magnesium Fuel Additive 20% — CHIMI MAG 20

An organo-magnesium fuel additive is an oil-soluble magnesium treatment dosed into heavy fuel oil to prevent vanadium slagging and hot corrosion. CHIMI MAG 20 is CHIMI ART's standard grade, with a minimum 20% active organo-magnesium in the same carboxylic acid, high flash point solvent chemistry as CHIMI MAG 30. It suits units with lighter dosing requirements, supporting cleaner fireside surfaces, better energy recovery, and lower maintenance costs.

Dosing Guidelines

Feed CHIMI MAG 20 neat, by direct injection into the fuel line before the burner. The established dosing range is 1:3000 to 1:6000 (additive:fuel ratio); the product contains a minimum of 20% active metal, so ratios are richer than for the 30% grade. Select the starting ratio from the fuel's vanadium analysis, then fine-tune during operation using fireside inspections, stack observations, and ash analysis. A simple metering pump paced to fuel flow gives steady, proportional treatment. Our engineers can review your fuel data and recommend a starting point and monitoring plan.

How It Works

Ash formed when heavy fuel oil burns contains vanadium and sodium compounds — including vanadium pentoxide (V₂O₅) and sodium vanadyl vanadates — that melt at the temperatures found on superheaters, producing sticky slag and hot corrosion of tube metal. The oil-soluble magnesium in CHIMI MAG 20 (minimum 20% active metal) disperses through the fuel and reacts in the flame with these vanadium species, converting them into magnesium vanadates with substantially higher melting points. Ash that stays solid at fireside temperatures does not bond to metal surfaces; it remains powdery and is removed by normal soot blowing. In parallel, magnesium oxide neutralizes part of the sulfur trioxide (SO₃) in the flue gas, reducing the risk of sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) condensation on cold-end surfaces. Confirm performance on your unit with a monitored trial.

Usage Tips

Keep CHIMI MAG 20 in sealed original drums or IBCs in a cool, dry, ventilated store; shelf life is 18 months. Treat it as a combustible hydrocarbon product: keep it away from open flames, hot surfaces, and strong oxidizers, and ground equipment during transfer. The additive is ready to use and non-abrasive, so standard dosing pumps and hoses are suitable. Wear gloves and safety glasses when handling, avoid skin contact, and review the SDS before first use.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does CHIMI MAG 20 differ from CHIMI MAG 30?

Both use the same organo-magnesium chemistry; CHIMI MAG 20 contains a minimum of 20% active metal versus 30%. It is dosed at richer ratios — 1:3000 to 1:6000 (additive:fuel) — and suits units with lighter dosing requirements or where a lower-concentration feed is easier to meter accurately.

What dosing ratio is recommended for CHIMI MAG 20?

The established range is 1:3000 to 1:6000 additive-to-fuel, fed directly before the burner. The working ratio within this range is set from the fuel's vanadium analysis and refined during operation using fireside inspections.

Is CHIMI MAG 20 abrasive to fuel pumps or burner nozzles?

No. It is a fully oil-soluble, ash-modifying additive rather than a solid slurry, so it is non-abrasive and can be handled with standard fuel-dosing pumps without special wear protection.

What packaging and shelf life apply to CHIMI MAG 20?

It is supplied in 200 L drums and 1000 L IBCs and keeps for 18 months when stored cool, dry, and sealed in its original packaging.

Does CHIMI MAG 20 improve combustion efficiency?

Magnesium-based additives promote cleaner heat-transfer surfaces, which supports better heat recovery and steadier boiler efficiency over time. The size of the benefit depends on the fuel and the unit, so we recommend a monitored trial to quantify results on your system.
