How It Works
Corrosion in distillation overheads occurs where water first condenses: chlorides hydrolysed in the crude form HCl, which concentrates in the initial condensate along with H₂S and attacks carbon steel in exchangers, condensers and drum internals. ART NOCOR 532 counters this by film formation. The polar amine head groups of the molecule chemisorb onto the metal, while the oil-soluble hydrocarbon tails orient outward, building a continuous hydrophobic layer that keeps the corrosive aqueous phase separated from the steel. The film is self-repairing under continuous injection: as portions are removed by turbulence or heat, fresh inhibitor adsorbs onto the exposed sites. Filming amine treatment complements — but does not replace — neutralization control of overhead pH; the two are typically operated together as part of an overhead corrosion control program monitored with coupons or probes.
Usage Tips
Store ART NOCOR 532 in closed original drums or IBCs in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from heat, ignition sources and strong oxidisers; shelf life under these conditions is 18 months. Keep containers bunded and label dosing lines clearly. Amines can irritate skin and eyes, so wear chemical-resistant gloves and goggles and avoid breathing mists at the injection point. Flush metering pumps and quills with a compatible hydrocarbon when taken out of service to prevent fouling. Consult the SDS before handling.
