Dosing Guidelines

The addition rate depends on the soluble Cr(VI) content of each clinker and cement, which varies with raw materials and kiln conditions. Typical rates are 0.05-0.5% by weight of cement, but the exact figure must be established by laboratory testing of every cement type. Dose the granules gravimetrically onto the clinker and gypsum feed to the finish mill so the reducer is ground and distributed homogeneously through the product. Verify performance by testing soluble Cr(VI) in the finished cement at routine intervals and after any raw-material change, because reducer demand shifts with clinker chemistry.

How It Works

Trace chromium enters cement clinker with the raw materials, and part of it is oxidised to the hexavalent state during kiln burning. When cement is mixed with water, this Cr(VI) dissolves as chromate — the species responsible for allergic chromate dermatitis among workers in contact with wet mortar and concrete. ART CHROM 9830 CM supplies reduced iron (Fe²⁺), which reacts with dissolved chromate, oxidising to Fe³⁺ while the chromium is reduced to the trivalent state. At the high pH of cement pore water, Cr(III) is essentially insoluble: it precipitates as hydroxide and stays locked in the hardened matrix rather than contacting the skin. The reducer is ground into the cement so it dissolves and acts immediately when water is added, and it retains its reducing capacity through the stated shelf life when stored dry.

Usage Tips

Store bags on pallets in a dry, cool warehouse, protected from moisture and humidity: iron-salt reducers gradually lose reducing capacity when exposed to damp air, so keep packaging sealed until the point of use. Shelf life is 24 months in unopened original packaging. Practise first-in, first-out stock rotation. Wear gloves, dust mask and goggles when handling the powder, and control dust at transfer points. The product is available in 25 kg bags, 50 kg bags and bulk deliveries with SDS and TDS documentation.
